What Is Index Futures?

Index futures are futures contracts written with indexes as their underlying asset instead of a physical asset like stocks or commodities.

Index futures allow indexes, which were once nothing more than numbers reporting on the status of a basket of assets, to be traded like a security. Index futures are normally cash delivered futures contracts which settle the profits and losses in cash by expiration.
